What is Mahjong?
Mahjong is a traditional Chinese tile-based game, usually played by four people, that blends strategy, pattern recognition, memory, and a bit of luck. Thought to have originated during the Qing dynasty in the 19th century, likely evolving from earlier card and domino games, it quickly spread across China and later to Japan, Southeast Asia, and the West. Each region developed its own rules and scoring styles, but the core idea remains the same: players draw and discard tiles to form winning sets, similar to rummy. Mahjong became internationally popular in the early 20th century, especially in the U.S., where adapted rule books helped fuel its rise.
American Mahjong is one of the 40 variations of Mahjong played today, following rules established by the National Mahjongg League (NMJL). Established in 1937 by a group of Jewish women in New York, American Mahjong remains both a cultural tradition and a modern past time, enjoyed in casual home games, competitive tournaments, and digital formats.
